3.17 Other services to support you at home

There are people that can be hired for cleaning, gardening, and other odd jobs around your house.

Private cleaners, gardeners and people who can do odd jobs

If you can afford them, private cleaners, gardeners, and people who can do odd jobs can help you maintain your home and garden.

They can do jobs that might be difficult or dangerous for the person with dementia such as making beds, cleaning blinds or mowing the lawn.

  • Private cleaners can cost between $25 to $50 per hour.
  • Private gardeners may cost $25 to $100 an hour depending on what you need them to do, and how frequently they need to come throughout the year.
  • People who do odd jobs may charge between $40 and $100 an hour, depending on the request.

To find a private service, ask your neighbours and local friends for recommendations. Private services are often advertised in the local newspaper, through letterbox drops, and online. If you are using Facebook, you can post a status to ask for recommendations on services in your area. You may even find out that someone you know offers that service!

Ask local family or friends if they have any recommendations about cleaners, gardeners, or people who do odd jobs.
