5.6 Your will

Your will can be written by a lawyer or public trustee in your area.

Your will

A will is a legal document stating what you want to happen to your assets when you die. You can have your will written by a lawyer or the public trustee in your area. The Government of Canada provides information regarding wills. Click here to read more.

The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada has information about making a will. Read Planning for Your Future and Will Planning Checklist.

You can also write your will using a will kit that can be purchased, but you will need to complete this correctly for it to be valid. It is important to think about this as soon as possible. If you wait until your dementia is too advanced, then you may lack legal capacity. This would prevent you from making decisions about your will.

Plan and prepare

  • Write a will. Select a substitute decision maker(s) and/or Powers of Attorney. Make an Advance Care Plan. Share these documents with others such as your doctor, lawyer, or most trusted family member or friend.
